"...and here is a chair for you to curl up in."
The familiar words of a beloved giant come to mind when I encounter Veronica Funk's paintings. Funk's artwork evokes comfort and contentment, a gentle time out from the hustle and bustle of the world, and a reminder of life's simpler pleasures; a plush chair to sink into and a good book.
"The depiction of a place to sit and read references the slow movement, voluntary simplicity, and alludes to a search for connection - connection to food, to people, to life, and ultimately to place" (Funk).
Although the theme in Sanctuary, the title of Funk's exhibit, is harmoniously consistent, each of Funk's paintings is remarkably individual. From starry-lit scenes reminiscent of childhood bedtime stories to cozy dens where one can burrow away for entire Sunday afternoons enraptured between the pages of a book - one can easily identify with Funk's aesthetic, and delight in her artistic ability to commpose distinct sumptuous forms in warm, rich colour.
