Deciding on a focus for my 52 WEEKS project proved challenging, but my daughter's gentle encouragement to return to portrait painting resonated with me. It was through portraiture that I was accepted into art college many years ago, so I embraced the challenge, treating it with the same lightness as my previous wildflower and animal series.
Choosing to paint portraits of women, I sought to celebrate those who have impacted me in some way and whom I considered my heroes. To push my creativity, I opted for the 7x14 inch canvases to which I added layers of acrylic painted pattern and colour. I also chose to include their words as what they say has been even more important to me than what they do.
