Mastrius Women

Picture
"The Mastrius Women project is an inspiring portrait series created by Veronica Funk, celebrating the power and connection between women. The project was born out of Veronica's personal experience of re-evaluating her life after a car accident in 2024. She was inspired by the supportive community of women she met through Mastrius.com, an online platform that connects artists.

The project features a series of portraits of women from the Mastrius community, showcasing their unique stories and experiences. Veronica's artistic process involves layers of colour and pattern, with asemic writing that reflects the choices made by these women to pursue their artistic passions. The project has been exhibited at the ASA Gallery in Calgary, and as been featured in publications such as Where Women Create magazine."

At the beginning of 2024 I was involved in a minor accident which made me stop and re-evaluate the important things in my life. What do I want? What do I need? What do I need to let go or embrace? I have found the most incredible community of supportive women as an Artist Mentor with Mastrius.com since 2021 and, in an abundance of gratitude for this community, I have been encouraged to paint a series of portraits of these inspiring Mastrius Women.

After preparing all the canvases with layers of colour and pattern, I lined them up and added 'The Road Not Taken' by Robert Frost using asemic writing, a wordless open semantic form of writing. This connects the women more closely as it closely reflects the choices made to live the life of an artist.

I am grateful for the artist who created Mastrius, Julie deBoer, the inspiring woman who saw a need for artists to connect during the pandemic and reached out to ask me to Mentor other artists. I am also beyond grateful for all of the women I have had the privilege to meet and have yet to meet...they have been the most supportive and encouraging group of women. Thank you.

The Road Not Taken
By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
