52 WEEKS...
As part of my BFA program course load I am supposed to create a one year project and as much as I've battled over what I would do for an entire year that would stretch my creative muscles while allowing me to continue to teach, write & exhibit, I considered the idea of: ~ a sketch-a-day (I used to post about daily 6x8 oil paintings when I began a previous blog five years ago) ~ creating weekly mixed-media work based on poetry ~ posting an online journal entry for the entire 365 days ~ sharing photos of the sketches and notes from my personal journal every day ~ creating a monthly three-dimensional object (carving or clay) But these ideas gave me anxiety rather than feeding into what I do now. So, when I stopped thinking about it all, yesterday on New Year's Day a vision of combining the work I've been doing over the past few years came into my mind, and thus I have decided to create 52 paintings, one a week for an entire year. I didn't want to limit the subject matter or media but wanted to create a body of work on the same size and shape of substrate - my favorite is stretched canvas - and when I looked at what was available to me I stumbled on these 7x14 inch canvases which was extremely appealing. And I have decided to incorporate spackle, one of my favorite texuring mediums which I wrote about in Cloth Paper Scissors magazine last fall. So, over the next 52 WEEKS I plan to create a painting a week, sharing my process and inspiration. And I know that I will need encouragement and accountability along the way so please feel free to email, message me on facebook, or leave comments ~ and keep in mind that I still love snail mail, too ;). Here's to an abundant & creative New Year! |
