"I worked as a lawyer and senior leader for over 25 years and then retired from the rat race to start my life as an artist, gallery curator and performance coach. I started The Plaid Moose Gallery to benefit emerging artists and to benefit our community through projects like my current one called Art is the Heart of a Home. My performance coaching work is teaching others how to be strong leaders. I personally am enjoying watercolour art and photography lately. Life is good." ~ Linda French

MASTRIUS.com: Join us November 18th, at 12 PM MT on ZOOM for our Live Paint Along!
Mastrius Master Veronica Funk has provided us with the INSPIRATION for our challenge and she will be joining us to talk about her painting, inspiration, AND to paint with us! Your challenge will be to paint it in YOUR own style! 🎨 🖌 Bring your supplies, and join us for an hour of painting together - this is open to EVERYONE (you don't have to be a Mastrius member!) You can use whatever supplies you have at home, here are the supplies that Veronica will be using: ▪ Acrylic paint ▪ Substrate (canvas, wood, paper) ▪ Brushes (Veronica likes flats but anything works) ▪ Water & rag. ▪ Veronica uses flow aid medium in her rinse water but it isn't necessary as plain water is fine, too. (You can also come just to watch and paint later!) CHALLENGE RULES: 👉 ANYONE can participate! 👉 Post your painting on Instagram and TAG us using #mastriuspaintingchallenge 👉 Challenge CLOSES at 11 am MT on November 25th! 🎉 We will pick two RANDOM winners on Friday, November 25th who will receive a beautiful Mastrius Apron (members) or a $25 Mastrius Credit (non-members)! Register for the free Zoom link here: https://form.123formbuilder.com/6293841/form In the new year I will be sharing a few workshops, from the business of art and preparing biographies, artist statements and curriculum vitaes to art/travel journalling and introduction to watercolours. I always love sharing the information I have learned throughout the past 25 years and have also been having so much fun creating several small mint tin palettes to share with others. I'm already looking forward to the new year.
"Technical writing is not a glamourous job. In fact, most people don’t even know it exists as a career. I love it though, as I get to have the satisfaction of knowing I’m helping people to learn and understand things easier, but I never have to worry about being in the spotlight. As a Technical Writer you get to put your flair on all sorts of documentation, but never your name." -Dusti Gomery
I've had a few questions about altered books so I thought I'd address them here:
..... 1. Libraries & recycle depots are wonderful places to find books that are in need of salvaging...I try to reclaim books that would otherwise be deemed trash. ..... 2. Any book will work, even when they are falling apart. I tape, glue & sew pieces together to bind them. My favourite adhesive is heavy body gel media & love using fabric as 'tape' too. ..... 3. Pages will need to be removed in order to reduce the thickness of the book. That's where I reinforce them with tape or fabric. I also adhere 2 opposing pages together to 're-bind' the book after removing pages. ..... 4. Sometimes I begin with a theme (ie. black & white or inspirational quotes), sometimes I'm actually inspired by the book's original title, and other times I just focus on whatever draws my attention & a theme mysteriously appears. There are so many ideas online, too. ..... 5. Each book takes months...I work on a few pages, using gel media & paint and then allow those sections to dry before continuing. Sometimes I place wax paper in between damp pages while I'm working. ..... If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask. Leading these workshops have always been a favourite. There is also more information on my website (link in bio in the dropdown menu under 'Portfolio' in 'Altered Books' & 'Artist Resources' - ie. photo transfers). Leighton Art Centre
